About Us

History

Asbury Station Chapter, NSDAR, began with the boom in growth in the Research Triangle area in the 1970s. With enough Cary women interested in forming a local DAR chapter, Asbury Station Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on February 5, 1982.

Our chapter was named for an early railroad station located about 2 miles from downtown Cary in the mid-1800s. Asbury Chapel, the railroad stop/station, a small school, and farms comprised this rural area. Bishop Francis Asbury, the namesake of the chapel, was a traveling British Methodist minister whose active ministry included the Revolutionary War era. Bishop Asbury visited the home of local magistrate Tignal Jones, the son of Francis Jones, who was the earliest known landowner in the Cary area (dating back to 1749).

Our membership has blossomed over the last several years, and we are active in our community to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Our chapter celebrated its 40th birthday in 2022. Here’s to another successful 40 years of service to the Cary community and beyond!

We were honored to include the Mayor of Cary in a play written by one of our beloved members and performed at the Cary Theater.

Celebration Time! Our chapter’s 40th anniversary was celebrated with tea, treats, and recognition from DAR state leaders.

Asbury Station Chapter, NSDAR,  participates in Cary’s annual Gifting Tree Project by decorating a tree in downtown Cary to promote patriotism and membership in DAR.

Meetings

Our chapter meets in the morning on the third Wednesday during the months from January through May and September through December. A typical meeting includes social time, a guest speaker, and a business meeting. We also have many opportunities each month and throughout the year to serve our community in various ways. Our chapter sends out a newsletter at the beginning of each month to highlight the previous month’s activities, upcoming service opportunities, as well as interesting educational and historical articles.

We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand our chapter and the DAR organization. You will learn more about our chapter by going to the “What We Do” webpage (see menu at top of page) to read about some of the ways we make a difference throughout the year!

Please contact us for the exact meeting dates and location. We also offer a virtual Zoom meeting for those who are unable to attend our meetings in person.
